Released from the ropes, but with nowhere to anchor. Holding an anchor in hand, but with no destination in sight.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"855\">Adrift in a vast ocean, I floated and wandered, more unsettled than ever before.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1248df9 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1248df9\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cddbaf2 Changing<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0793ddb exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0793ddb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"996\">During that time, I reread some books and started to rethink what the \u201cself\u201d really means.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1040\">There was one metaphor I especially liked:<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1192\"><strong data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1192\">\u201cImagine yourself as a river.<br data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1076\" \/>A river is always flowing, but an essential part of a river is its banks.<br data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1152\" \/>Without the banks, there is no river.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1248\">The flowing water represents our ever-changing nature.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1328\">We evolve through our experiences, emotions, and roles, always moving forward.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1473\">The riverbanks represent the resilient and flexible boundaries that shape and contain the water, giving each river its unique and visible path.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1587\">Seeing myself as a river helped me embrace change more gently, without treating every shift as a form of \u201closs.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element Identity Doesn\u2019t Mean Losing Yourself<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c37121 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c37121\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"1701\">This reminded me of a story shared by writer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradstulberg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brad Stulberg<\/a>\u00a0in his book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Master-Change-Everything-Changing-Including\/dp\/006325316X\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master of Change<\/a>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1703\" data-end=\"1711\">He said:<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"1805\"><strong data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"1805\">&#8220;Whether or not I can lift the barbell today just doesn\u2019t matter as much as it used to.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1940\">As a kid who was constantly bullied, he turned to American football to feel safer. Strength training became a way to prove his worth.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1942\" data-end=\"2008\">Back then, the identity of \u201cathlete\u201d was almost everything to him.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2120\">After entering college, he stopped playing football and started running marathons and competing in triathlons.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2122\" data-end=\"2184\">He changed, but \u201csports\u201d still remained central to who he was.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2186\" data-end=\"2268\">Effort, discipline, performance\u2014these were still the cornerstones of his identity.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2270\" data-end=\"2359\">Fast forward, and Brad finds himself back in the gym, gripping a barbell, squatting down.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2492\">But the reflection in the mirror is no longer the teenager desperate to prove himself, nor the young man obsessed with achievement.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2622\">This time, he wasn\u2019t training to <em data-start=\"2527\" data-end=\"2535\">define<\/em> himself\u2014but simply to let movement accompany him in the process of <em data-start=\"2603\" data-end=\"2621\">becoming himself<\/em>.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2624\" data-end=\"2667\">His identity had widened, softened, opened.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2669\" data-end=\"2728\">He is now a husband, father, writer, coach, reader, friend.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2789\">He no longer needs a single role to define his entire self.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2791\" data-end=\"2911\">Like a river that keeps flowing and expanding, yet always remains the same river.<br data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"2875\" \/>By allowing change, he became whole.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9d6ad3 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no Self<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bfb47b0 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bfb47b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2957\" data-end=\"3092\">What makes us so shaken in the face of change is that our identities are often tied too tightly to a specific goal, person, or concept.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3152\">So when that role shifts or fades, we ask: <em data-start=\"3137\" data-end=\"3152\">Who am I now?<\/em><\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3154\" data-end=\"3277\">In Buddhism, there\u2019s a theory of the self that draws a distinction between the \u201cconventional self\u201d and the \u201cultimate self.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3279\" data-end=\"3338\">The <strong data-start=\"3283\" data-end=\"3304\">conventional self<\/strong> is the one you use in daily life:<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3340\" data-end=\"3411\">The one reading this article, working on tasks, stopping at red lights.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3503\">This self has clear roles and functions, grounded in the present, with defined boundaries.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3505\" data-end=\"3575\">The <strong data-start=\"3509\" data-end=\"3526\">ultimate self<\/strong>, on the other hand, is more fluid and expansive.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3577\" data-end=\"3729\">It includes your interactions, your changes, your connections with others.<br data-start=\"3651\" data-end=\"3654\" \/>It holds your childhood, ancestral memory, environment, culture\u2014everything.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3731\" data-end=\"3825\">It\u2019s the extended self, the evolving self, the \u201cme\u201d that exists within a larger field of life.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3827\" data-end=\"3848\">Both selves are real,<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3850\" data-end=\"3929\">Just like the water and banks of a river\u2014they exist together to form the whole.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3931\" data-end=\"4058\">But we can\u2019t live only in spiritual abstraction.<br data-start=\"3979\" data-end=\"3982\" \/>We still have to stop at red lights and deal with life\u2019s immediate problems.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4060\" data-end=\"4179\">Nor can we live solely within our habitual roles and identities, forgetting that we are more than the sum of our parts.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4181\" data-end=\"4285\">We are rivers flowing through different terrains, never fixed to a single shape or stretch of riverbank.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b70724 e-flex centered my identity on being a student.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4557\" data-end=\"4688\">School was a structured world with clear goals and metrics\u2014a place where effort translated into scores, and scores into self-worth.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4690\" data-end=\"4774\">But when that identity left the stage, I felt abandoned\u2014like an orphan in the world.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4776\" data-end=\"4828\">I\u2019d forgotten that I was more than just a \u201cstudent.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4830\" data-end=\"4892\">I\u2019m a creator, a daughter, a mental health advocate, a reader.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4894\" data-end=\"4960\">Someone who\u2019s drawn to cute animals, and especially fond of sheep.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4962\" data-end=\"5059\">These roles might not have been so obvious before, but they were always there\u2014quietly shaping data-start=\"5100\" data-end=\"5222\">What I\u2019ve learned since then is that the goal isn\u2019t to become some <em data-start=\"5167\" data-end=\"5182\">one true self<\/em>\u2014but to build a self made of many parts.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5224\" data-end=\"5265\">Identity is like a house with many rooms.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5267\" data-end=\"5313\">Each room represents a different part of life:<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5315\" data-end=\"5373\">Creator, child, partner, parent, athlete, healer, learner\u2026<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5375\" data-end=\"5470\">When one room changes\u2014an injury, a breakup, a retirement\u2014you still have other rooms to live in.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5472\" data-end=\"5561\">Just like a river that flows through different terrains, sometimes rapid, sometimes slow.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5563\" data-end=\"5596\">But it never stops being a river.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5598\" data-end=\"5655\">Water can change shape, but its essence remains the same.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"5657\" data-end=\"5666\">So do data-start=\"6001\" data-end=\"6086\">Some of the labels once stuck to me will fade; others will fall away and be replaced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6088\" data-end=\"6215\">Rather than clinging to the question <em data-start=\"6125\" data-end=\"6138\">\u201cWho am I?\u201d<\/em>,<br data-start=\"6139\" data-end=\"6142\">perhaps it\u2019s more meaningful to ask:<br
