This relentless busyness leaves us with little room to pause and truly experience the present moment.<\/p><p>As described in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Four_Thousand_Weeks:_Time_Management_for_Mortals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Four Thousand Weeks<\/a>, modern people perceive time as a conveyor belt of boxes that must be filled as quickly as possible. Students who follow this approach often take frantic notes, believing that simply writing everything down means they have &#8220;acquired&#8221; the knowledge.<\/p><p>Before entering university, I followed this method myself\u2014trying to record everything from textbooks, assuming it would guarantee good exam results. However, I rarely engaged in <strong>critical thinking<\/strong> about the material. According to <strong>Erich Fromm<\/strong>, learners in the &#8220;having&#8221; mode cling to <strong>accumulated knowledge<\/strong> rather than engaging in creative thinking.<\/p><p>In contrast, learners who embrace the <strong>&#8216;being&#8217; mode<\/strong> approach their studies differently. They ponder the subject matter beforehand, forming their own questions before the lesson. This explains why people often rely on photographs and external aids to recall experiences, rather than embedding them deeply within their minds.<\/p><p>When these individuals attempt to <strong>document their experiences<\/strong>, they become preoccupied with capturing images rather than <strong>immersing themselves in the moment<\/strong>. Later, when they look back at these photos, they may find that their memories feel <strong>detached and alienated<\/strong>\u2014as if they have lost the authenticity of their experiences.<\/p><p>Conversely, those who adopt the <strong>&#8216;being&#8217; mode<\/strong> approach memory more dynamically. They view memory as a <strong>living experience<\/strong>\u2014one that can be revisited, reinterpreted, and relived over time. For them, memory is <strong>not static<\/strong>; it flows and evolves. This shift not only allows for <strong>a deeper appreciation of life<\/strong> but also enhances our ability to be fully present in our experiences. When we stop worrying about <strong>an uncertain future<\/strong> or <strong>dwelling on past pain<\/strong>, we create space to enjoy the <strong>peace of the present moment<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Shifting towards this way of living requires <strong>practice<\/strong>. A simple way to begin is by stepping outdoors and <strong>allowing your senses to absorb the environment<\/strong>\u2014letting your thoughts and emotions flow naturally with the scenery. <strong>Expanding your awareness<\/strong> is another useful exercise. For example, try staring at your hand for ten minutes, observing every detail carefully, or focus intently on the feeling of the wind brushing against your skin.<\/p><p>If these exercises feel too abstract, practicing mindful eating or fully immersing yourself in a film <strong>without distractions<\/strong> can also serve as ways to cultivate the &#8216;being&#8217; mode.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a274a6f e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"a274a6f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b742e78 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b742e78\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h1 data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><strong>Sustaining the &#8216;Being&#8217; Practice<\/strong><\/h1>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d239098 exad-sticky-section-no exad-glass-effect-no elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d239098\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote><p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\"><em>The mode of being has its prerequisites independence, freedom, and the presence of critical reason.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>This <strong>mode of existence<\/strong> is not about external busyness but rather about creatively applying our abilities to <strong>experience and comprehend the world<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The <strong>experience of being<\/strong> cannot be fully articulated in words. As <strong>Fromm<\/strong> once stated:<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><blockquote><p><em>Yet none of these experiences can be fully expressed in words. The words are vessels that are filled with experience that overflows the vessels. The words point to an experience; they are not the experience.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><p>We must recognize that <strong>&#8216;being&#8217; is not a static state<\/strong>; rather, it is an ongoing, <strong>fluid experience<\/strong>.
